To celebrate the UK’s return to normal shopping activities on June 15th, Hartnoll & Young have released “I’m Going Shopping” on Kazoo Sounds with all proceeds donated to ‘NHS Charities Together’.
All together now: “I’m putting on my gloves, I’m putting on my mask, I’m going shopping.”
Paul Hartnoll - one half of ground-breaking electronic dance music duo Orbital – and controversial poet and performance artist Murray Lachlan Young have released the first fruits of their extraordinarily-prescient, lockdown-inspired musical collusion on their label. The neo-apocalyptic song - simply called I’m Going Shopping - is no doubt the most pertinent and apposite piece of music to hit any retail store since the Brooks Brothers kicked off that collaborative experience in the USA in 1818. However, It’s also a musical group hug, and just the kind of perfectly-realised slice of lockdown insight and pop supremacy that the world has been waiting for.
The artwork for I’m Going Shopping was provided by renowned British sculptor Abigail Fallis, famed for her commentaries about over-consumption and consumerism, and the video was put together by Giles Thacker, who has been at the cutting edge of moving image design for over 25 years, as well as being video maker and animator with Orbital for over twenty years.
Hartnoll comments: “I’m Going Shopping is delivered in a techno style with a pitch shifted robotic vocal that leads us on a ‘new normal’ shopping trip from beginning to end. It began as a total rush of creativity and is as natural, uncomplicated, honest and funny as it gets.”
Lachlan Young comments: ““Paul and I both thought whilst lockdown seemed to be shifting its shape on an almost hourly basis – it might be useful to try to offer a little bit of light-hearted perspective on things. Lyrically, I felt it was important to not lose sight of the surreal elements of the whole experience. I also felt that people could do with a bit of a laugh.”
